We often hear the phrase “seeing is believing”, and often, we take this phrase for granted. It is usually used as a way to express a joke, or casually used in a sentence. Some, however, take this phrase and make it a reality.

Graham Mallen is a PE and Psychology teacher currently located at Al Yasmina school, Abu Dhabi, UAE (United Arab Emirates). His resume includes teaching at Thomas Clarkson Community College, Cambridgeshire, UK, Manor School Sports College, Northamptionshire, UK, and Al Bateen School, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Graham MallenCurrently a PhD student, Graham is focusing on video analysis and how it influences skill acquisition by increasing the feedback loop. TechSmith’s video analysis app, Coach’s Eye, is the tool Graham uses to provide instant feedback to his students. In his words, “It can be quite easy for the teacher to tell them what to do. With Coach’s Eye we are able to ask students to evaluate themselves and involve them with figuring out a solution to the problem.”

Too often, especially in American schools, answers are readily given to students. Students that participate in real problem solving are rare, and a teacher that facilitates problem solving is even more uncommon. No doubt, one of the hardest things about teaching is trying to create engaging lesson plans. Yet, there is a certain charm about seeing and learning from your own video. Providing the students with a tool where they are asked to critique their skills has proven to be an effective way to facilitate learning in the classroom.

Analysis with Coach's EyeGraham explains:

“We shouldn’t want our students to become passive consumers of education. Therefore, allowing students the opportunity to take control of their learning is important to their life long development. After all, that is what education is all about. As teachers, we should support this… and using video is a great tool for facilitating learning.”
